Olivier Gueris
Chief Operations Officer, Qatar Exchange
Over the past now 19 years, I have been working on 4 different continents in the area of Exchange operations. I have always been fortunate enough to fill very interesting positions in varied locations. I specialize in managing trading and post-trade operations as well as surveillance for fully electronic derivatives or stock Exchanges. I hire the team, define operational procedures, set up the help-desk, steer the project with other members of the management team, run day-to-day operations and the business relation with brokers, market makers, third parties and regulators : here are in a nutshell the caracteristics of the job I thoroughly enjoy.
Thanks to my global background and tribulations, I am a EU national, US Green Card holder and Australian Permanent Resident.
Kalex is a Hong-Kong based consulting company that I joined in order to offer such services to financial institutions and IT companies in Sydney, Australia. While in Australia, I launched the Australian Derivatives Exchange as its Sr Manager, Marketing and Sales and then went on to help set up the Australian office of GL Trade.
I am still on board of the company as a non-executive Director.
2008 - 2009Turquoise is an eagerly anticipated pan-European stock Exchange due to launch in late summer 2008. While in project mode, I am in charge of setting up Market Operations from scracth, hiring the team, training them, writing procedures.... I also help with the definition of a very ambitious and innovative market model that will hopefully shake the European market place. After 20 years in this business, Turquoise is by far the most interesting and intellectually challenging Exchange venture I was ever given the chance to work for.
2003 - 2008BOX is the newest fully electronic US equity options exchange, and proud of several innovations that shook the industry. I joined BOX in 2003 as its very first hire with a mission to set up yet another Market Operations Center and manage both operational and customer support areas. I am a member of the management team and I also represent BOX in several industry groups.
1999 - 2000GL Trade is a heavyweight in the field of trading, back office and STP software. In charge of a newly created position aimed at selling our technology directly to stock or derivatives Exchanges around the world, I greatly diversified my skills and experience by adding missing IT components that have proved invaluable since.
1989 - 1999I started on the MATIF open outcry pits and moved up to become Trading Floor Manager. When markets went on-screen, I set up Euronext's Market Operations Center, the first one in a long list. The job included hiring the team, training it, writing down market procedures, drilling them, managing the project before going live and then steering market operations and customer support day-in day-out, along with related projects.
